We need your support in helping us make this exciting new branch of our Snake Tracks reptile conservation project a reality.

The Problem: Rat snakes spend a large amount of their active time high in the canopy of large trees. They often bask on large, exposed horizontal limbs out of good view from observers on the ground. This creates great gaps in our data collection of these agile climbing reptiles.

The Question: How do we collect microhabitat environmental data on these snakes when they are located high in the tree canopy?

The Solution: Use a UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) camera platform to fly up above the snakes to collect observational microhabitat data and to conduct extended monitoring of environmental conditions (humidity and temperature) using data logging devices placed, and later retrieved by the UAV.

This video documents our first test of the flight and precision control capabilities of a UAV. After this very successful test, we now believe that a UAV camera platform such as the DJI Phantom 2 Vision or Vision+ or the soon to be released PlexiDrone would be very effective in allowing us to collect this data that has eluded us in the past.

A UAV will also be able to be used with our other projects - Turtle Tracks and Timber Rattlesnake Tracks and on our YouTube series - Wild Adventures with Steve and more.

A UAV will also be able to be used in environmental monitoring projects in Steve's science classes at Trails Carolina and Trails Academy.

If we are able to fund this project we will be sure to keep you updated with video field reports of our progress monitoring the snakes using the UAV.
